What's so great about Industrial Placements?

...are they actually a good idea? Our students seem to think so. Students on the BSc Construction Project Management and the BSc Quantity Surveying and Commercial Management spend their third year working in industry before returning to the Department to complete their final year.

The Department recently held an industrial placements day where the students who had returned from placements made a series of presentations to the second years. The day was well attended and the students were keen to share their experiences and enthuse the second years for a year of 'real' work. Photos by Franco Cheung.

You want to know where some of our third year students are working this year?

  • PT Angle Bali on the island of Bali, Indonesia
  • Dawkins Demolition, near Luton
  • Bruce Shaw Partnership in London
  • Symm & Co in Oxford and Fawley
  • Leadbitter in Abingdon
  • Mace in London
  • Gleeds Cost Management in Southampton
  • Beard Construction in Surrey
  • Kingerlee Ltd in Oxford
  • Byrne Group in London
  • CBRE in London
  • McDonald Egan in London
  • BAM Construction

Finally a word from Michael Hill, Director of Undergraduate Programmes: 'having a course with a compulsory year in industry is great because it makes students get a job and invaluable work experience in the real world which will give them the edge in the job market after they graduate. And sometimes it can even lead to a permanent job.'

...and I think the students who have been on placement would agree with this. You can read some more comments from our students about their experience of industrial placements on the Oxford Brookes website.
